In 1891, Tom MCcall arrived in a new land to create a homestead. He may not have been aware that the area, which was famous for its beauty, was also known for its dance halls. The abundant trees, rich countryside and beautiful lakefront must have attracted him. Over the next few years the area began to boom. The land was rich in ore and lumber making it a prime target for those interested in these resources. This city itself developed to provide much needed supplies and services to the men who worked in the mines and in the lumber industry. A ferry system was implemented early on to transport lumber, ore and supplies to the area.
While timber long remained the leading industry in the area, citizens realized that the long, cold winters were anything but exciting. In an attempt to create some excitement and perhaps generate more interest in the town a group of local residents, working with Corey Engen (an Olympic ski champion) developed the Winter Carnival. Scheduled events included the dog sled races, ice sculptures and more. Today, McCall is one of the favorite spots to enjoy the beauty of a pristine Idaho winter.
The town, which was briefly known as Lakesport, was dominated by the lumber industry until the 1970s. Since then, it has become a year round resort for those interested in both winter sports and the beauty of a fresh summer lake. McCall is more than a simple resort town. It is an area rich in heritage, dotted with history and full of the wonders of the Idaho countryside. Many consider it the perfect example of the Idaho countryside.
It is likely that McCall, Idaho will remain a favorite of those that enjoy winter sports and weather. From its first wild and rowdy citizens to those who forged ahead to create the Winter Carnival, McCall will long be remembered because of its pioneering citizens.
