McCall, Idaho has a long history that is rich in stories of old time miners, women of questionable reputations, long ski trails, rich lumber and full mines. Throughout its history, McCall’s economy has been based on a variety of industries. The town itself was originally built to support local lumber and mine workers.
The economy of the area was originally based on hard living. Along the shores of the lake, bars, gambling house and whorehouses were built. The area was known for its rough citizens and hard living. It was, however, a living and allowed the area to develop enough to support a different kind of economy,
Next, came the realization that the area was rich in both lumber and ore. Miners and loggers flooded the area, hoping to hit it big as quickly as possible. McCall became a center for trade. Stores, transportation and hot spring spas sprung to provide lumber workers and miners with the support they needed as well as the tools and supplies they required. It was good living and one that lasted for many years.
It wasn’t until the 1970’s that the last of the lumber industry finally died out in McCall. The event led to another reincarnation of the area’s economy. McCall became a premier resort town. The hot springs, beautiful lake and gorgeous winter county side were ideal for resort purposes. Today McCall’s primary industry is hospitality and service.
The economy of McCall, Idaho continues to grow. The resort industry has changed the face of the economy in this city.
