Some Americans believe that President Obama should not legally be President because he was born outside of the United States. Although the Hawaiian Office of Records has shown his birth certificate, some claim that he was actually born in Kenya, where his father is from, or in Indonesia, where he spent time as a boy.
Only American citizens born on US soil may become president, which also prevents Arnold Schwarzenegger, an Austrian citizen, from running for president. Other Americans claim that Obama did not win the popular vote in his 2008 election and therefore should not be president. Although it is claimed that he had a 7% margin over John McCain, some blame voting irregularities such as those present in Florida during the first Bush election, may have caused Obama’s share of the vote to become inflated.
Some believe that many registered Republicans may have voted Democrat in the last election, causing the shift in popular vote, but some believe that Obama’s win was caused by widespread electoral fraud. There has been no proof of this though. Currently, Republicans control the House of Representatives. Although the president is elected separately and this shift has only come about since the midterm elections, some may believe that this means that he should not be president legally, as his party does not have a controlling share of the votes in the house.
No matter who is elected president, there will likely be people who believe someone else should have won. What they fail to realize is that, in many cases, changing this situation would mean amending the constitution. Since it takes a majority of both the house and senate to make a change to the constitution, it is not likely that this will happen.
